He Ghosted Me and Came Back — What It Means & What to Do

He vanished with no warning. Now he's back in your phone like nothing happened. Let's figure out what to do with that.

One day he was there — texting, planning, present. The next, nothing. No fight, no explanation, just silence where a person used to be. You spiraled, you blamed yourself, you eventually started to heal. And now, right on cue, here he is again: "hey stranger," like he stepped out for coffee and not off the face of the earth.

Before you answer, let's talk about what actually happened — because the story you tell yourself about this next part matters.

First: the ghosting told you something true

Ghosting isn't a mysterious act of God that happened to both of you. It was a choice he made — to handle discomfort by disappearing instead of having a conversation. That's real information about how he deals with hard things: he doesn't. He exits.

And that information didn't expire just because he came back. A man who vanishes rather than say "hey, I'm not feeling this" is telling you, clearly, that when things get uncomfortable, you will be left in silence rather than talked to. The return doesn't erase that. It confirms you now have a full picture.

Why they come back (it's rarely what you're hoping)

I know the hopeful story: he came back because he realized what he lost, he's been thinking about you, this time is different. Let's gently look at the more common reasons, because they're less flattering and more accurate.

  • His other options dried up. The thing that pulled his attention away faded, and you're the familiar, warm door he knows how to knock on.
  • He got bored or lonely. Not "he missed you" — he missed company, and you're a known quantity.
  • He felt you finally moving on. Some people only reach back the moment they sense you're genuinely gone — not because they want you, because they don't want to be the one who lost you.

Notice none of these is "he did the work to become someone who won't disappear on you again." That one's possible — but it's rare, and it looks like an actual accountable explanation, not a breezy "hey stranger."

The test, if you're even considering it

You don't have to decide anything today, and you certainly don't owe him a fast reply — he didn't extend you that courtesy. But if part of you wants to leave the door open a crack, here's what to watch for, because it separates the rare real return from the usual reset:

  • Does he acknowledge the ghosting — plainly, without being dragged to it? "I disappeared and that wasn't fair to you" is a start. "hey stranger 😅" is not.
  • Does he explain, or just charm? A real return comes with an honest reason. A reset just turns the warmth back on and hopes you won't bring up the silence.
  • Does he move things forward, or just reopen the chat? Back to actual plans and consistency, or back to the same low-effort hum that made disappearing easy last time?

If he skips straight to flirting like the silence never happened, that's your answer. He's not returning to repair anything. He's testing whether the door still opens.

What you actually owe him

Nothing. I want to be clear about that, because guilt loves to sneak in here — "maybe I'm being cold, maybe I should hear him out." You are allowed to not respond at all. You are allowed to say "I'm not interested in picking this back up." You are allowed to need an explanation before you give him another minute of your attention.

Silence was his answer for however long he was gone. You're allowed to make it yours now.

The part I'd want you to keep

The question was never really "why did he come back." It's "do I want to reopen something with a person who already showed me how he leaves." You've seen his exit strategy. That's not a small thing to know about someone — it's one of the most important things.

He didn't miss you. Most of the time, he just ran out of other options and remembered the door you keep unlocked. You are allowed to change the locks.

You already knew that. I'm just the one who said it out loud.
