Why Does He Keep Coming Back but Never Commit?
Share
Every time you almost get over him, he comes back. Let's talk about what that actually is.
You know the rhythm by now. You finally get some distance. You stop checking your phone. You're almost — almost — over it. And right on cue: a text. An "I miss you." A little crumb of warmth landing the exact week you'd stopped waiting for it.
And it feels like proof. He came back, so it must mean something. Right?
Coming back and choosing you are not the same thing
Here's the part that's hard to hear, so I'll say it gently: he doesn't come back because he realized what he lost. He comes back because he noticed you leaving.
Those are completely different, and the difference is everything. A man who wanted you would commit. A man who wants to keep you available just reappears whenever you drift too far — enough warmth to reset you, never enough to actually build anything. You're not being pursued. He's coming back because he knows he can.
What the return is actually for
Notice what the comeback accomplishes, because it's precise. It doesn't move anything forward. It resets. It puts you right back in orbit — close enough to stay, never close enough to land.
He always does this: vanishes, lets you get to the edge of moving on, then reappears with a "hey stranger" like he's doing you a favor. And the audacity works, because you read the return as romance. It isn't romance. It's a man checking that the door still opens when he pushes it.
The story you're being told vs. the one that's true
The romantic version says: he keeps coming back, so somewhere in there he must really care, and one day he'll realize it and stay.
The true version is quieter and colder. A man who doesn't choose you now is not going to suddenly transform into a man who does — the coming back is the whole relationship, not the prelude to one. Returning is easy. It costs him nothing and keeps his options warm. Committing is the part he won't do, and it's the only part that would have meant anything.
The one thing to watch
Stop measuring the comebacks. Measure this instead:
Watch what he does when you ask him to stay — not what he does when you start to leave.
Anyone can reappear when they feel you slipping; that's just protecting the option. The tell is what happens when you ask for something real — a title, a plan, a future. That's the moment that tells you whether you're a person he's building with or a seat he's keeping warm.
The part I'd want you to keep
You are not a place he gets to return to whenever the world gets cold. You're allowed to close a door and mean it — and to stop mistaking "he came back" for "he chose me," because you've felt the difference the whole time.
You already knew that. I'm just the one who said it out loud.
